H-Town Cool

fb2When you’re in Houston looking for a jazzy good time, you’ll do well to head to the Red Cat Jazz Café. The winner of the Houston Press Best Jazz Club award, the Red Cat Jazz Café has an intimate, sexy feel bringing a cool New York-style jazz lounge vibe to the heart of the city’s downtown nightlife. The Café‘s longtime owner, Sam Pink, refers to his club as, “Uptown sophistication with a down-home Southern twist.” A description that matches Houston itself with its blend of international flair, artistic heritage and history of being home to a fusion of jazz, blues, R&Bfb1 soul.

The back patio calls to mind New Orleans jazz clubs on the bayou. The Sunday brunch buffet includes grilled fish; eggs prepared a variety of ways, grits, roasted garlic potatoes, waffles, pasta, sausage, pastry towers, fresh fruit and mimosas

The Red Cat Jazz Café regularly hosts the regions’ up and coming players as well as being a showcase for major national and international acts. The Robert Glasper Experiment performed there recently, as did Warren Hill, Nick Colionne, Marion Meadows, Will Downing, Eric Darius and many other notable contemporary jazz and soul performers.

The Red Cat alsofb9a has its paws in numerous other music related projects. Among them, Red Cat TV, a record label, Red Cat Music Group, and most notably the Red Cat Jazz Festival taking place this year October 10 -13.  It kicks off with the Celebrity Golf Classic at Moody Gardens Golf Course. There’s an opening night reception and concert featuring Jazz in Pink, and this year’s concert celebrates the 50th anniversary of music legend Ronnie Laws.
